If you receive job orders outside of your network, should you bother taking them?  How about going after them proactively?  The answer is a resounding “No.”  Nonetheless, recruiters continue to pursue job orders that are outside of their industry expertise – largely because for small staffing agencies, every placement is a significant gross profit.

However, Scout data shows that taking  job orders outside a domain of expertise is often to no avail.  While the fee can be tempting, generalists who are successful in filling orders outside their specialty are a vast minority – 91 percent of all positions filled by third party recruiters are done so by specialty recruiters, who understand the nuances of that industry and already have a pipeline of qualified candidates.

Quit fooling yourself: You’re most likely not going to fill a job outside of your specialty.  Scout President and Founder, Sean Bisceglia, will draw on his experience running staffing firms to discuss how specializing helps recruiters improve time-to-fill, make time for more of the positions they’re great at filling, and lead to the greater long-term profit agencies and recruiters are after.

Sean Bisceglia’s success began early in his career when he founded TFA, a marketing technology company that he sold to Leo Burnett and was recognized as the youngest corporate executive vice president in Leo Burnett history. He was also named ’40 under 40′ by Crains Chicago. Bisceglia, also a serial entrepreneur, acquired CPRi with William Blair and Company in 2003 and achieved growth of over 200% in less than 2 years, turning it into a nationally recognized staffing firm that he then sold to Aquent, LLC. With a passion for exploring new ideas that change the way the recruitment world works, Bisceglia founded TalentDrive in 2007 with Chuang, a recruitment technology company with a profitable API partner model with a 100% renewal rate, that he also sold to Aquent in 2011.
